2025 29er North American Championship a Smashing Success at the PYC
Fifteen teams from arounds the country and Canada competed at Portland Yacht Club in Falmouth, Maine over 3 days for the 2025 29er North American Championship title. 12 races were sailed. Friday brought beautiful sunny skies, and a nice South wind at 5-14 knots. We were able to run 5 races (maximum allowed) on this first day to get the regatta going. On Saturday, we woke up to very rainy skies, and unfortunately it never really stopped precipitating. Nonetheless, 4 more stellar races were sailed in a very nice 7-17 knot E/SE wind. Waking up on Sunday, it is likely that few thought we would race at all. Forecast called for “light and variable” and we all know that that means. Not to be deterred, the RC steamed out after an hour delay on shore, and magically, our trusty sea breeze filled in, the skies became sunny, and we sailed 3 more races to achieve a 12-race North American Championship for the International 29er Class.

Our PYC Junior Sailing team, Noelle Caola and Caroline Heersink competed bravely in their first-ever 29er regatta, and learned a great deal about this exciting Olympic development class. They seem very eager to continue on and certainly showed that they can be a top team with more training and practice.

At the helm of the Lindsay Lord, PRO Tim Tolford produced masterful volunteer race committee work with the help of Jay Corson and Dave White, Bob Kellog, and Cathryne Tolford. Many thanks to this crew.
PYC received numerous unsolicited compliments on the facility, the sailing area, and our people. In fact most everyone seemed overwhelmingly happy. The 29er Class Association called shortly after the event to thank the Club profusely for running such a great event. We thank all who contributed and also who offered their patience with the intrusion. It was very heartening to see such positive sailing energy in the parking lot and on the water, and our kids and sailing program benefited enormously from this experience.
